Stand assist: The new M-250 can help improve patient care

This month we unveiled our new M-250 with stand assist: a revolutionary scale with ergonomic design to ease patients from a sitting to standing position.

The movement from sitting to standing can be a great strain on those suffering with existing conditions. Hip fracture is the most common serious condition in older people and costs the NHS £1billion per year.

Better patient care

According to the National Hip and Fracture Annual Database (NHFD) In 2016, over 65,000 people aged 60 or older presented to 177 hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.[1] This means a large proportion of patients in residential care or admitted to hospital will have a current or are recovering from a hip fracture or injury. In addition to injuries a significant number of the UK population will have a condition that limits their mobility and will have to be regularly weighed as a part of their treatment.

There are approximately 850,000 people in the UK suffering with dementia [2] and 145,000 people have Parkinson’s disease [3]. Not to mention the one in every 50,000 people who will develop Motor Neurone Disease each year [4]. This is just a small example of the types of conditions that impair someone’s ability to sit and stand unaided.

At Marsden our primary focus for any new innovation is to improve patient care, comfort and dignity in all areas. The M-250 was developed precisely with these statistics in mind. With so many treatments requiring an accurate weight, our aim was to develop a solution that would relieve pelvic pressure on patients/residents whilst offering support and ease of use for caregivers.

Helping to relieve back pain

Helping patients or care home residents in and out of a sitting position can cause a series of issues for staff. Care homes are one of the most affected workplaces for back injuries due to repetitive strain.

Poor moving and handling, or simply repeated lifting can induce back problems such as:

  • Sciatica
  • A slipped disc
  • Ankylosing spondylitis [5]

All of which could require permanent ongoing treatment. The M-250 is a way to weigh patients/residents with ease for both parties.

How to use the Marsden M-250 Chair Scale with Stand Assist

The powered lifting seat of the M-250 gently eases the patient/resident in and out of the chair, either with the use of an additional stand assist frame or with carer assistance. The steady, comfortable motion is designed to follow the natural movement of someone easing themselves up or down.

You can see how the M-250 works in the video below.
